Feature: Redi Services on 20-Mile, 14-Bridge Project
One of the more interesting service lines that Redi Services offers is concrete hydro demolition. This encompasses pumping water at extremely high pressure to break up concrete to a predetermined depth on freeway overpasses to speed up bridge repairs. Recently Redi was involved in a high-profile concrete demolition undertaking in southern Utah, under the direction of the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT).
Redi was recently featured in an article by Aquajet, who is the manufacturer of the high-pressure robots used to blast the old concrete. Shown here are Redi personnel involved in the largest hydro demolition project undertaken by UDOT. Over several weeks Redi performed in a safe manner, delivering a quality service product to UDOT. Cody Austin leads our hydro demolition operations and has developed a safe and highly efficient team of professional hydro blasters that impressed UDOT officials.
Here are some highlights from the Aquajet article:
The project was the largest Hydrodemolition undertaking in the state’s history. With a number of bridge decks on I-70 between Cove Fort and Sevier showing signs of significant wear, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) knew they were looking at a major repair operation. The 20-mile project included replacing the deck concrete on 14 parallel bridges to extend the life of the structures and provide a better driving surface.
At the end of the project, the Redi Services saved an estimated 1 million gallons of water as a result of recycling. Workers removed about 3,300 cubic yards of concrete, most of which was recycled.
“Hydro-blasting contractors used to have a reputation for being wasteful and not doing much to catch and treat the wastewater,” Austin said. “UDOT officials, impressed with our collection and recycling efforts, tell us they expect there will be a lot more Hydrodemolition jobs on the horizon.”
