Forklift Safety Tips for Industrial Construction
Safety is of paramount importance for any industrial construction project, and especially when working with equipment that can be dangerous without the right precautions. A great example here is any jobsite that utilizes forklifts, which are enormously useful for many projects – but must have proper safety habits observed around them at all times.
At Redi, we’re here to provide a huge range of industrial construction services to clients around Wyoming, Colorado and Nevada, including safety training services for a variety of needs. Here are some basic tips on how to observe proper safety when using or operating near forklifts for any need, ensuring that these important items are used properly and effectively.
Proper Training
First and foremost, heavy equipment like forklifts requires proper training to operate safely. This is true for both the operators as well as anyone else on the jobsite who may be near forklifts during use.
The OSHA requires that all operators be trained and certified before operating forklifts. It’s important that operators are familiar with the specific type of forklift they will be using, as different models may have unique features or controls. There will be both classroom learning and hands-on training to ensure proper understanding of safety protocols.
Regular Forklift Inspections
Another very important safety habit is to regularly inspect forklifts before each use. This includes checking the tires, brakes, steering, controls, and any other components that could cause an issue during operation. Any issues should be reported immediately and equipment should not be used until it has been properly inspected and repaired.
In most cases, forklifts should also be inspected after each use. This will help to catch any issues that may have occurred during operation and ensure the equipment is safe for future use.
Safety Gear
For anyone who will be operating a forklift, proper safety gear is a must. This includes hard hats, high-visibility clothing, and steel-toed boots. It’s also important to have safety equipment in place on the forklift itself, such as seatbelts and guardrails, to protect the operator from potential accidents.
Furthermore, proper safety equipment must be worn by anyone who is in the vicinity of forklifts during use. This can include safety glasses, earplugs, and any other gear necessary to protect against potential hazards.
Speed Limits, Corners and Other Driving Tips
As forklifts can be moved easily and quickly, it’s important to observe specific guidelines when operating them. This includes following speed limits, especially in areas with heavy foot traffic. It’s also crucial to be extra cautious when navigating corners or turns, as this is where many accidents occur.
Additionally, forklifts should never be used to lift people or other workers. Only the operator should be on board at all times.
Removal of Clutter and Debris
In any area where forklifts will be used, it’s important to regularly remove any clutter or debris that may pose a hazard. This can include loose materials, wires, or other objects that could interfere with the safe operation of forklifts. It’s also important to keep walkways and pathways clear to prevent accidents involving both pedestrians and forklifts.
Safe Distance Buffers
There are a few key safe distance buffers that should always be observed when operating forklifts. This includes keeping a safe distance from other workers, as well as leaving enough space between the forklift and any walls, shelves, or other objects in the work area. It’s important to maintain a clear and open path while operating forklifts to reduce the risk of accidents.
You should also be leaving space from the edges of raised platforms, docks or other drop-offs to prevent falls or accidents.
Turn-Off and Storage Concepts
Another major safety precaution when using forklifts is to ensure that they are turned off and stored properly. This includes lowering the forks to the ground, setting the parking brake, and turning off the ignition once finished with use.
Forklifts should also be parked in designated areas or in a locked location when not in use. Many industrial construction sites will have specific areas for parking and storing equipment like forklifts, or they may be stored in a secure location overnight.
Safety is of utmost importance when operating or working near forklifts on any industrial construction project. Proper training, regular inspections, use of safety gear, observance of speed limits and safe distance buffers, and proper turn-off and storage concepts are all key components to ensure the safe use of forklifts. By following these tips, we can create a safer working environment for everyone on the jobsite. So always remember, safety first!
