Safety Themes for Industrial Construction Welding

Several processes in the world of industrial construction require important safety concepts to be maintained at all times, and a great example here is welding. Welding is a common process in construction, but also one that creates some notable hazards -and ensuring anyone who will be present on the site is protected from these hazards is important.

At Redi, welding is one of numerous industrial construction services we offer to clients around Wyoming and Colorado – and we also provide extensive safety training programs for many of our services. Here are some basics on the hazards present in welding settings, the kinds of equipment that welders need to have on-hand, and some other simple safety tips for any welding project.

Common Hazards Present During Welding

There are a few known potential hazards that are part of the welding process, including:

  • Flame and fire: The largest and most notable hazard present with welding is the risk of flame and fire. Every welder must be properly trained in how to properly use their equipment, as well as how to contain any potential sparks or flames that may arise during their work.
  • Electric shock: Electric shocks can be caused by faulty wiring or other electrical elements used in welding processes, and they can occur when welders are not properly protected. Wearing grounded safety gear is a must in order to avoid potential shocks.
  • Radiation: The most common type of radiation that welders come into contact with is ultraviolet light, which can cause burns and other skin issues if the welder isn’t properly protected. Welders should wear flame-resistant clothing and use goggles or a welding helmet to shield against the UV light.
  • Chemical exposure: Via a process known as “off-gassing,” welders may come into contact with certain chemicals that can be released during the welding process. It’s important for welders to take appropriate safety measures such as wearing respirators and ensuring adequate ventilation in order to avoid potential exposure.

Equipment Required For Welding Safety

In order to perform welding safely, it is necessary to have the right equipment on-hand. This includes:

  • Safety clothing/gear: Flame-resistant clothing and other protective gear are a must for welders in order to shield against potential hazards. This includes gloves, boots, aprons, helmets, and more.
  • Fire extinguishers: Fire extinguishers should be readily available on the welding site in case of any potential fires or flames.
  • Earplugs: Welding can be quite loud and may cause hearing damage if proper precautions are not taken. Earplugs should be worn in order to avoid potential ear damage, as well as other safety gear such as respirators or face shields depending on the type of welding being performed.

Creating a Safe Welding Area

Some other general tips for making your welding area as safe as possible:

Proper ventilation: Ensuring that there is adequate ventilation in the welding area will help reduce potential exposure to certain chemicals and fumes. Be sure to set up fans or other ventilation systems to help keep air circulating.

Keep flammables away: Flammables such as gasoline, oil and solvents should be kept away from welding areas in order to avoid potential fire hazards.

Check electrical wiring: Before starting any welding project, all electrical wiring and connections should be checked to ensure they are properly grounded and in good working order.

Inspect equipment: All welding tools, machinery and other equipment should be inspected prior to use to make sure they are in proper working condition.

Secure clothes and equipment: The last thing you want during welding is for clothing or safety gear to become loose and fall into the flame. Double check that all items are properly secured prior to beginning work.

Wear the right clothes: Simply having the proper clothes on-hand is only half the battle – welders must also be sure to wear them properly in order to stay safe. This includes things like flame-resistant clothing, gloves, boots and other protective gear.

By following these simple tips and taking the necessary precautions, you can be sure that your welding projects will be as safe as possible. And at Redi, we strive to make sure that our customers have access to the best resources and equipment available in order to help them stay safe on the job. If you have any questions about welding safety or need help finding the right gear for your projects in Wyoming or Colorado, don’t hesitate to reach out – we’re here to help.
